Nuclear fuel capability and micro nuclear reactors backed in UK Government Nuclear Sector Deal
28 June 2018 Global U-BatteryToday the UK Government announced a new deal with the civil nuclear industry including commitments to support the country’s nuclear fuel capability and help progress the development of micro nuclear reactors.
Commenting on the announcement, Urenco Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Haeberle, said:
“Urenco welcomes today’s announcement by the UK Government which shows clear support for the UK’s nuclear fuel capability, micro nuclear reactors and advanced manufacturing, and ensures that the country maintains its global leadership in the nuclear sector.
'Domestic nuclear fuel capability is of key importance for the country’s energy security as well as the retention and development of highly skilled jobs in the UK. It also makes a strong contribution to the economy both nationally and regionally. Urenco is well positioned to supply all the new nuclear build programmes across the country, with a reliable supply of enrichment services and fuel cycle products for the entire lifetime of these reactors.
'We are enthused by the Government reaffirming its backing of the UK nuclear fuel industry internationally. This support boosts the robustness of the UK’s fuel offering to international markets and helps to ensure that the country continues to act as a global leader in this sector.
'We, along with our consortium partners, are also delighted that our micro nuclear reactor, U-Battery, has received the green light to progress to Phase 1 of the Government’s AMR Programme. During Phase 1 we will produce a feasibility study, which will make the commercial and technical case for U-Battery. Urenco is looking forward to using its high tech capabilities to play its part in fuelling this next generation of reactors, which deliver a low-carbon solution to address the energy and decarbonisation challenges in the UK and global markets.”
