UUSA Makes WHI Hobbs’ Day

27 May 2021 UUSA

UUSA is the largest financial donor to the United Way of Lea County for the 15th year in a row

This year, UUSA is on a mission to show appreciation to the organizations who are making a difference in this community through “UUSA Makes Your Day”. On Monday, April 19, UUSA surprised workers at Weekend Hunger Initiative (WHI) in Hobbs with balloons and goodies to show appreciation for all the great work that they do.

Through their backpack program, WHI Hobbs delivers bags of food to Hobbs ISD students who are food-insecure so they have nourishment over the weekends.

“Over 23% of children in Lea County are food insecure,” said Leslie Pfalzgraf, the Executive Director of WHI Hobbs. “Each week, our staff fills bags of food and works with local schools to distribute them to the children who need them.”

WHI Hobbs has been working diligently during the pandemic to ensure these children continue to receive the meals they need by extending their program throughout the summer months as well.

“We appreciate the work that WHI Hobbs does for so many reasons,” said Karen Fili, President and CEO of UUSA. “I have a saying: ‘We work here...we live here... and we give here,’ and I’m so proud to be able to give back to organizations like WHI Hobbs who support our community in this way.”
