The construction of a new Tails Management Facility at our UK site is now complete and has clocked up some impressive statistics.
During its construction the TMF needed:
- 55,000m3 of concrete – enough to fill 200 Olympic swimming pools
- 7,300 tonnes of steel – which could make a replica of the Eiffel Tower
- Enough pipework to make another Channel Tunnel (linking England to France)
What is even more impressive is that the construction was achieved with seven million hours of safe working, making the TMF one of the safest construction sites in the UK.
The TMF will be operated by our subsidiary, Urenco ChemPlants. Commissioning is underway and operations are expected to start later this year.
It is a vital part of our sustainability programme by responsibly managing nuclear materials on behalf of our customers. Our 2018 Sustainability Report will be published on 6 June.
This film was made in collaboration with ITN Productions and the Chemical Industries Association as part of a programme called Solutions for our Future.
