Urenco ChemPlants donation to Alder Hey Children’s Charity

As part of its strong commitment to safety, Urenco ChemPlants (UCP) has donated £3,000 to Alder Hey Children’s Charity.  The money is from a fund set aside by the company to award excellence in safety practices at its Capenhurst site in Cheshire.

Employees and contract workers for UCP were asked to nominate charities in which they have a personal interest. The children’s hospital is one of three charities chosen from the shortlist to receive a donation from the £9,000 fund.

Dr Doug Annan, Managing Director, UCP, said: “Over the past three months, we have hit a number of significant safety milestones.  Our safety culture is based on a commitment to personal accountability and for the safety of others.  Employees decided that they wanted to donate the money set aside to mark these achievements to three local charities.  Alder Hey was nominated by Phil Glanvill, one of our maintenance planners.  He has personal experience of the great work that Alder Hey does and we hope this donation will help them continue to provide excellent care and treatment to those children most in need."

Phil Glanvill’s two-year-old grandson (pictured), who has had a series of operations on his heart, is being treated at Alder Hey.  “Without the dedication of the staff on Alder Hey’s cardiac ward - Ward 1C, my grandson may not be here today, which is why I am really pleased Urenco ChemPlants is making this donation.  I’ve also completed a sky dive to raise money for them and I will continue to help raise funds for the hospital in whatever way I can,” said Phil.

The donation will make a real difference to the children and young people who are being cared for on Ward 1C.”

UCP’s safety milestones which resulted in the charity funds included exceeding four years without a lost time injury as well as the company’s Others’ Keeper Award.  This award, which usually recognises individuals or small teams who take action to ensure the safety of others, was awarded this quarter to everyone working for UCP for the commitment, adaptability and flexibility shown in bringing in new working arrangements, which have helped keep everyone safe during the global pandemic.  The company is classified as an essential business and has continued to operate during the pandemic.
