Small emission of non-radioactive substance
10 June 2016 Local Urenco NederlandAt approximately 10.30 today (10 June 2016), there was a small emission of a non-radioactive substance at Urenco Stable Isotopes on the Almelo site in the Netherlands. The substance, germanium fluoride is a corrosive substance that reacts with condensation in the air to form hydrogen fluoride. Five firemen were found to have inhaled the substance and were taken to hospital. Two Urenco employees were also taken to hospital but were released shortly afterwards.
The installation was immediately put into safe mode and the incident was reported to the authorities. A full investigation will be carried out in due course.
