Urenco jointly hosts STEM event in Wales

10 May 2024 Global

We team up with Virginia Crosbie MP to showcase young nuclear careers at a further education college.

Urenco helped coordinate a nuclear careers and skills session in Anglesey, North Wales, with MP, Virginia Crosbie on May 9.

Hosted at Coleg Menai’s Llangefni Campus, part of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai (GLlM) North Wales's largest further-education (FE) institution, the session brought together learners aged 15 -17 with an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) to learn more about Urenco and our Capenhurst site, the nuclear sector, and the career opportunities available.

As part of the session, Tomas – ex apprentice, now Maintenance Technician; Sam – ex apprentice, now Shift Operator; Louie – ex apprentice, now Shift Operator; and Alice, Business Development Graduate, spoke to the learners about their roles at Urenco and what they wish they had known when deciding their future learning and career paths.

Learners also had the opportunity to hear from Virginia on her role in Parliament and her work to promote and expand the nuclear industry across North Wales and the North West and the impact on the economy, jobs, skills, local and regional business and the environment.

Speaking after the event, Virginia said:

"The UK’s nuclear sector is growing and to meet the Government’s nuclear ambitions we need to rapidly ramp up recruitment in the sector.

"Nuclear has excellent career opportunities and I was delighted to support the careers session with Urenco at Coleg Menai.

"Many young people may have not considered a career in nuclear despite the North West Nuclear Arc region being home to leading nuclear organisations.

"Sessions like those at Coleg Menai help show the wealth of opportunities the sector has to offer, supporting industry to build a long-term pipeline of talent."

Urenco is committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers.
