Richie ‘recreated’ goes on tour

Urenco has taken its annual Richie lecture on the road for the first time, bringing it closer to the communities where its enrichment sites are located.

USA Colleagues from our Eunice site in New Mexico welcomed around 400 children and their families to ‘Richie's Summer Science Experience’ at the popular Lea County Fair and Rodeo this summer.

This saw the annual STEM lecture (science, technology, engineering and maths), normally hosted at the UK’s Science Museum in London, recreated as an event to suit the community and maximise its impact.

Looking ahead, we expect to rotate the location every year, giving each of our sites a chance to host it and interact with their community further.

Visitors to Eunice learned about Urenco, how we help provide energy security to the world and some of the ways the nuclear industry is positively impacting the world of medicine and the environment.

Managing Director for UUSA, John Kirkpatrick, said, “We enjoy the workshops we do each year with the fifth grade students in our local schools, and are glad to take it one step further in our community this summer by involving the whole family in the experience.”

Richie is the children's mascot and brand name for Urenco's STEM educational programme. In addition to offering free workshops at schools and for young people's groups near our sites, we host educational materials on our website and run an annual event to engage and enthuse children about the wonderful possibilities available to us because of science.

Some of them will, we hope, be inspired to continue studying STEM subjects, and all will recognise the valuable contribution science, and nuclear energy, makes to the world around us.

Watch our short video above to get a sense of this year’s event and how these events in general encourage and inspire the young people who attend.
