Urenco at G7 forum as agreement reached over nuclear fuels

17 April 2023 Global

The UK, US, Canada, Japan and France made the agreement, in Sapporo, Japan.

Urenco has welcomed an announcement made alongside the G7 Energy Ministers’ Meeting for greater collaboration to diversify nuclear fuel supplies.

The UK, US, Canada, Japan and France made the agreement, in Sapporo, Japan, which will act as a “springboard” for the five countries to make progress around ensuring the secure supply of uranium fuel through shared supply chains, now and into the future.

Emilie Isaacs, Head of Government Affairs for Urenco, said:

“Energy security and independence have never been as important as they are today, and this announcement is a big step towards ensuring a greater and sustainable diversity of supply when it comes to nuclear fuels.”

Meanwhile, at the Nuclear Energy Forum, which ran in conjunction with the Energy Ministers’ Meeting, Urenco CEO Boris Schucht spoke on a climate security panel about the importance of nuclear as a complement to renewables. Boris also emphasised the critical role of nuclear in producing baseload power, heat and hydrogen for industrial sectors.

The same day nuclear bodies had issued a joint declaration calling on G7 governments to support the long-term operation of existing nuclear power plants and to speed up the deployment of new ones.

The declaration was signed by World Nuclear Association Director General Dr Sama Bilbao y León, alongside leaders of five other nuclear trade associations - Canadian Nuclear Association, Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, nucleareurope, Nuclear Energy Institute (US), and Nuclear Industry Association (UK).
