Nuclear fuel deal agreed for Ukraine’s energy independence

Urenco has signed a significant new contract for the long term supply of enrichment services with Ukraine national nuclear operator, Energoatom, helping to strengthen the country’s energy security and independence.  

Representatives from Energoatom and Urenco signed the contract at the World Nuclear Exhibition 2023.

This contract offers a secure and diverse supply, fuelling the nuclear reactors in Ukraine operated by Energoatom, which generate over half of the country’s electricity and are vital for a reliable source of electricity for their people.

Urenco has worked with Energoatom since 2009 and this contract sees us remain their major supplier well into the next decade.

Welcoming the development, CEO of Urenco, Boris Schucht said: 

“Since the outbreak of the conflict, it has been more important than ever that Urenco plays its part to assist Ukraine to generate power for the country. 

“We have provided support to our customer Energoatom, and its employees, and increased our supply of nuclear enrichment services to them to help enable energy independence and security of supply.  This latest agreement will continue our productive working relationship.”

Urenco’s global presence ensures diversity and security of supply for customers through enrichment facilities in Germany, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK.

UK Minister for Nuclear Andrew Bowie said: 

“Diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on Russian nuclear services and fuel is key as Ukraine defends itself against Russia’s barbaric invasion. 

“This major contract between Urenco and Energoatom will help secure Ukraine’s energy independence in the years to come.”

UK Minister for Industry and Economic Security Nusrat Ghani said:
 
“This deal is welcome news for the people of Ukraine and shows what the UK and Ukraine can do when we work together.  Nuclear power provides well over half of Ukraine’s electricity and has become even more important since Russia’s illegal invasion inflicted massive damage on much of the rest of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
