The independent Net Zero Review Chair Chris Skidmore MP visited Urenco Capenhurst on March 2.
Mr Skidmore was taken around the UK enrichment site on a tour and met Urenco colleagues.
On March 3 he brought together representatives from the energy industry, academia, regional business community and local government to discuss the opportunities for north west collaboration and growth as the UK pushes ahead with its net zero agenda.
The expansion of nuclear power is a key part of the Government’s plans to increase its energy independence while producing more low-carbon energy on the pathway to net zero by 2050. Urenco plays a vital part in providing the fuel required for power plants in the UK and around the world.
Mr Skidmore said “The north west represents a sizeable industrial cluster which has a significant amount of expertise in delivering low-carbon energy, such as nuclear, hydrogen and renewables, and related activities. This will be pivotal to helping the UK achieve its emission targets.”
The regional roundtable on Friday focussed on efforts to highlight the north west’s role as a centre of excellence for net zero, and identify opportunities for greater collaboration and promotion of infrastructure provision, skills, supply chain, and international trade and investment.
Mr Skidmore added: “Following the launch of the Mission Zero Coalition, I was delighted to visit Urenco’s site in Cheshire. It is one of four globally that is already working towards delivering more low carbon electricity to households, following the invasion of Ukraine which impacted energy supplies."
Debbie Breasley, Director of Government Affairs (UK) at Urenco, said: "We were delighted to welcome Chris to our Cheshire site and grateful for the discussion on closer collaboration around net zero solutions across the north west and nationally.
"His independent net zero review has demonstrated that nuclear alongside renewables and hydrogen must be present in the energy mix if we are to hit our emission targets."
