Urenco submits evidence to cross-party committee of MPs

26 October 2022 Global

Urenco has taken part in the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee’s inquiry on nuclear energy.

It is essential that the UK maximises energy generation from nuclear power to achieve net zero and energy security targets, Urenco has told a cross-party group of MPs.

Urenco has submitted evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee’s inquiry on nuclear energy, which is examining the Government’s approach on delivering new nuclear capacity in the UK.

This follows the publication of the Government’s Energy Security Strategy earlier this year which has the aim for nuclear to supply 25% of electricity by 2050.

We emphasised that with the cost of gas in Europe and the UK at record levels, the UK has to maximise energy generation from low-emission sources, such as nuclear and renewables.

We also outlined that with the acceleration of advanced technologies such as High Temperature Gas Reactors (HTGRs), significant investment is needed to produce the advanced fuels required for them to run.

Furthermore, we called for a clear pathway to provide regulatory approval for small and advanced modular reactors (SMRs & AMRs) given the current lack of harmonisation. This would be an enabler to rolling them out efficiently across the globe, with the Government providing a supporting role.

Emilie Isaacs, Head of Government Affairs for Urenco, said: “Nuclear is a proven source of low-carbon energy generation and essential to energy independence, energy security and net zero.

“We welcome the Committee’s focus on this important issue and look forward to its final report and recommendations to ensure that the Government continues to support nuclear energy and the roll out of the next generation of nuclear power plants.

“This continued commitment is not just required for greater investment and the development of capacity, but for attracting increased numbers of highly-skilled people to build and operate the new fleet, the remaining existing fleet, decommissioning and safely processing depleted fuel.”
