Urenco has spoken about the nuclear fuel cycle and its changing landscape before an audience at the Bank of America in New York.
Manager of Sales and Marketing, Dr. Magnus Mori explained how he believed the enrichment part of the fuel cycle had enough resilience to cope in the light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
However, investment to expand the company’s enrichment capacity required the support of long term customer contracts. Urenco is potentially looking to add resilience to all four of its enrichment sites, if the conditions are right. This is in the light of customers wanting to diversify their fuel supplies, as a result of the conflict.
Dr. Mori appeared before the audience earlier in September, which was composed of investors and those interested in understanding the dynamics of the fuel cycle and more widely nuclear energy.
He also stressed that Urenco was conscious of fully utilising existing capacity to help address the imbalance in the fuel cycle. It has additionally been using its inventories to supply customers since March.
Dr Mori said after the event: “It was an honour to present to the Bank of America and stress how the nuclear industry is committed to playing its part to keep the lights on during these trying times.
“Since the conflict in Ukraine, there has been a renewed interest in sustainable, low carbon nuclear energy to help utilities, governments and more widely countries, achieve security of supply and energy independence.
“This means all of us in the fuel cycle stepping up to deliver more and finding solutions to ensure we are resilient in the long term, whilst still delivering on net zero.”
