Innovative thinking has resulted in Urenco Nuclear Stewardship realising over £600,000 in cost-savings, thanks to their industry-recognised experts’ waste packaging solutions, as part of a decommissioning project for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
Since 2012, Urenco Nuclear Stewardship have been successfully progressing the decommissioning of legacy nuclear facilities at Capenhurst. As part of the contract, Urenco Nuclear Stewardship removed internal cell structures which had been used to safely store depleted uranium in steel drums, dating back 60 years.
As with any demolition project, there was a significant amount of material that required safe and responsible management through recycling and disposal. Urenco Nuclear Stewardship’s Project team and Waste Management experts worked hard to develop efficient, innovative and cost-effective waste packaging solutions, while also ensuring safety remained the number one priority.
Urenco Nuclear Stewardship Commercial Director, Sam Hounslow, said, “It is always exciting to see the expertise of our team being put to good use. Empowering our teams to employ questioning attitudes and encouraging environments for collaboration breeds innovation that in real terms provides our customers with value for money, while maintaining an exemplary safety record. The creativity in the team to look for different solutions to industry norms encourages innovation that matters: simple, but effective methods that realise efficiencies in our projects and cost-savings for our customers.”
Urenco Nuclear Stewardship is nearing the end of the decommissioning agreement that sees more than 20 projects for the NDA being completed by 2024 – forecast to be ahead of schedule and realising a multi-million-pound cost saving.
