Supporting nuclear innovation at COP26 event

04 November 2021 Global

Urenco’s CEO, Boris Schucht, will speak today at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) COP26 event ‘Nuclear Innovation for a Net Zero World’.

The event aims to create conversations between government and industry on the complementary role of nuclear power and renewables in the transition towards a carbon-neutral future, and how international cooperation is needed to enable this transition to net zero, through advances in technology, but also financing mechanisms, and global policy frameworks.

Our CEO, Boris Schucht, will present findings from a recent study that Urenco commissioned which was carried out by Aurora Energy Research “Decarbonising Hydrogen in a Net Zero Economy”, and highlight how innovations in nuclear can support low-cost and low-carbon hydrogen production.

Boris will say: “Aurora’s models show that deploying renewables and nuclear for power and hydrogen production can facilitate rapid decarbonisation and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Combining hydrogen and nuclear also leads to competitive costs and using heat and electricity together from a nuclear power plant for hydrogen production provides a clear cost advantage.

“To capitalise on these opportunities, we need supportive policy decisions and a new financing model for nuclear. This will enable industry to focus on the development of high temperature reactors as an option for the next generation of reactors, which can produce heat and electricity for hydrogen and can reach a new level of inherent nuclear safety.”
