Urenco was pleased to see the UK Government’s announcement last week that “home-grown, green technologies such as offshore wind and nuclear energy” will support its pledge to decarbonise the electricity system by 2035.
The announcement, coming ahead of the COP26 Climate Change conference next month, enhances the decarbonisation ambitions previously articulated in the Government's 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and Energy White Paper.
It stated that the Government will double down on efforts to deploy a new generation of home-grown technologies – from offshore wind, hydrogen and solar, to nuclear, onshore wind and Carbon Capture and Storage.
“These green technologies will use the wealth of Britain’s natural resources to deliver cleaner, cheaper power, and create thousands of new high-skilled jobs in new industries across the UK….To ensure a clean electricity system is reliable, wind and solar power will need to be complemented by other clean technologies, such as nuclear and flexible technologies, that can supply electricity or reduce demand when the output from wind and solar generation is low.”
Emilie Isaacs, Urenco Head of Government Affairs, said: “This is a very positive and important announcement. The facts show that all low carbon technology solutions will be required to meet climate goals. Nuclear power clearly has a key role alongside renewables in the clean energy transition through supporting reliable, low carbon electricity generation and the future production of hydrogen, and Urenco will continue to deliver on our part in this.”
