Decarbonising hydrogen at COP26

On 9 November, Urenco and EDF hosted a reception in Glasgow for COP26 delegates to discuss how hydrogen production can help us to achieve net zero.

The event focused on a Urenco initiated and independent study by Aurora Energy Research, which provides important models on the cost and competitiveness of nuclear’s role in realising climate change goals.

Boris Schucht, Urenco’s CEO, Simone Rossi, EDF Energy CEO and Aurora’s Felix Chow-Kambitsch together revealed that decarbonisation and hydrogen production can be achieved more easily and more cost effectively with nuclear’s contribution. The findings support the UK Government’s Hydrogen Strategy and provide an important step in enabling policy makers to pave the way for the delivery of Net Zero by 2050.

The event was concluded by the Rt Hon Amber Rudd, who shared her reflections on nuclear at COP26 in her capacity as the Climate and Energy Policy Board member of Public Policy Projects. She emphasised that this year’s COP has been based more on delivery than pledges, and that effective policy and financing will be the driving force in achieving our green industrial revolution.

Boris Schucht said: “While the Aurora study was based on the UK energy industry, it is highly applicable to other countries, including developing nations. This could provide valuable insights for the attendees of COP26 on how nuclear can help to achieve collective goals as part of the energy mix.”
