Urenco welcomes US DOC draft agreement on Russian uranium imports
17 September 2020 GlobalUrenco welcomes the draft agreement by the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and Rosatom on the level of uranium imports into the US from 2021-2040.
The need for a revised ‘Suspension Agreement’ was highlighted by the conclusions of the Nuclear Fuel Working Group and US DOC’s post-preliminary analysis in the Administrative Review of the current agreement.
The DOC has taken into account the diverse concerns of US stakeholders to produce a balanced solution, which will help support domestic enrichment capacity and reinvestment in that capacity.
Urenco’s New Mexico facility, UUSA, operated by Louisiana Energy Services, is a domestic supplier of enrichment services in the US. Our involvement in the US uranium market is in the best interests of our customers to ensure a reliable, transparent and timely supply of nuclear fuel to US reactors.
In 2008, the Domenici Amendment codified the current Suspension Agreement into US law. Since there is a termination clause in the new Suspension Agreement, LES would support a similar codification into US law to ensure that it lasts until 2040.
