Urenco welcomes new UK carbon emissions target

04 December 2020 Global

Urenco welcomes the UK Government’s pledge to realise a more ambitious target of reducing the country’s emissions by at least 68% by 2030.

Urenco welcomes the UK Government’s pledge to realise a more ambitious target of reducing the country’s emissions by at least 68% by 2030, as compared with 1990 levels.

This increases the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target, originally set under the Paris Climate Agreement, from 53%, and comes ahead of the UK hosting the COP26 climate change conference next year.

The announcement follows the UK Government's Ten Point Plan for a green industrial revolution.

Nuclear has a critical role to play in achieving the new target. It provides zero carbon electricity for consumers around the world 24/7 and in all weathers, and Urenco is proud to facilitate this.

Emilie Issacs, Urenco Head of Government Affairs, said: “2020 has seen a series of very encouraging announcements from the UK Government on climate change. This pledge further demonstrates a serious intention for the UK to be seen as a leader in decarbonisation.

“Urenco supports this effort. We are ready and willing to play our part with our leading technology and highly skilled teams, and look forward to seeing further detail as the plans progress.”
