Nuclear’s valuable role highlighted in UK Government response to Committee on Climate Change report
22 October 2020 GlobalEncouraging statements about the future role of nuclear were included in the UK Government’s response to the Committee on Climate Change’s 2020 Progress Report to Parliament.
The response, published this month, emphasises that clean growth and the target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 should be at the heart of the economic recovery from COVID-19.
It states: “In order to deliver a reliable system, wind and solar will need to be complemented by sources of power which are available when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine. This will increasingly have to come from low carbon sources including nuclear...
“Nuclear power will continue to play a role in the UK’s future energy mix as we transition to a low-carbon economy, including through our investments in small and advanced modular reactors.”
