Six million safe working hours for Urenco’s Tails Management Facility in Capenhurst

16 April 2018 Global Urenco ChemPlants

Urenco’s construction of a new deconversion facility has achieved an outstanding safety record of six million hours without work related injuries or illnesses, known as Lost Time Injuries.

The Tails Management Facility (TMF) in Capenhurst will manage the deconversion of depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6), or tails, to stable uranium oxide (U308), for safe storage and potential re-enrichment.

This milestone of no ‘Lost Time Injuries’ firmly cements the site as one of the most safely run construction sites in the UK, which is testament to the strong safety culture that has been embedded by Urenco’s employees and its contractors.

Doug Annan, Urenco ChemPlants Managing Director said:

“Safety is a core value in Urenco and I am incredibly proud of everyone involved with the TMF Project who have achieved this significant milestone of 6 million safe working hours and established such a strong safety culture on site.

‘To mark this achievement we have made a donation to CANtreat, a local charity which funds projects to improve the environment in cancer treatment clinics at NHS Hospitals in the North West of England”.

Laurent Odeh, Urenco Executive Director of New Business said:

“The TMF is a key part of Urenco's commitment and leadership in responsible uranium stewardship. I am appreciative of each member of our TMF team who have maintained this exemplary safety record- a fantastic achievement”.

Once operational, the TMF will consist of a number of associated storage, maintenance and residue processing facilities to support Urenco's long term strategy for the management of tails.
