On 5 December, the 2017 Richie Lecture took place at the Science Museum in Wonderlab: The Statoil Gallery. Looking at the UK's energy mix, it aimed to inspire students to consider the world’s energy requirements and importance of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers.
More than 120 students attended this year’s Lecture and had the opportunity to hear from Shawn Brown, energy engineer and previous winner of the Young Apprentice of the Year award. Shawn shared with the young audience his experience in the energy industry and the important role scientists and engineers will have as the industry changes, including the increase in electric cars and the Government’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 2050.
The event also gave students the opportunity to explore the Urenco sponsored Wonderlab. The interactive gallery, which features live demonstrations and immersive experiences, has now welcomed more than 360,000 visitors since it opened in October 2016.
Dr Stephen Billingham, Chairman said:
“Urenco is committed to nurturing an interest in STEM subjects, and through our Richie programme, which has been running since 2007, we want to encourage as many young people as possible to pursue a career in STEM.”
“Every day, Urenco and the wider STEM industries rely on scientists and engineers. It is only by inspiring the next generation that we can ensure the UK has the skilled work force required for our ever-changing world, and through our annual Richie Lecture and our partnership with the Science Museum we hope to raise awareness of the vast array of opportunities available to students.”
