21 January 2015 Global

Helmut Engelbrecht, Chief Executive Officer of Urenco Group, today gave a speech at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London as part of the View from the Top series of lectures.

With the title “Energy for all: how can nuclear power contribute?”, Dr. Engelbrecht’s address to an audience of business leaders and academics focused on his personal views of how nuclear power can help create secure, safe and affordable low carbon energy.

His talk covered the investment challenges of new nuclear as well as the ongoing safety requirements of new power module designs. He explained how the market for nuclear power was now truly global and how new markets were developing quickly, particularly in the Middle East, due to increasing energy demands. He also introduced the concept of multi-size nuclear power, ranging from micro nuclear power reactors to small modular reactors to the existing range of large reactors. In this way, customers have the choice to adopt the size of nuclear reactor which best suits their energy needs and investment capabilities.

Helmut Engelbrecht, Chief Executive Officer of Urenco Group, said:

“Everyone has a right to the basic essentials of life and this includes affordable energy. This is why I am passionate about the role that nuclear power can play in our lives on a global basis. As the world’s population increases and the standard of living rises, we should champion nuclear power as being a safe, secure form of low carbon energy.”
