Urenco launches solar park

21 May 2024 Global Urenco Deutschland

The park at our site in Gronau will become the second biggest ground-mounted solar installation in the region.

Renewables and nuclear energy complement each other well in the fight against climate change, Urenco CEO Boris Schucht said, as he marked the launch of a solar park at the company’s German site.

The park at our site in Gronau will become the second biggest ground-mounted solar installation in the region of Münsterland.

Once built, 14,112 solar panels will generate almost 6 MW peak, supported by a storage system of over 10.3 MWh. This will ensure the flexible use of renewables at the site and support grid stability.

This could supply the equivalent of around 1,400 four-person households with electricity.

Urenco has plans for solar installations at all of our sites as part of our overall commitment to achieving net zero within our operations by 2040.

Boris and the Urenco board attended the site launch alongside staff on May 14.

Urenco has a near-term target to reduce our scope 1, direct emissions, and scope 2, emissions from purchased electricity, by at least 90% by 2030 (compared to our baseline year of 2019).

The solar park contributes towards our scope 2 efforts.
